The majority of the 10 players who compete in the 2011 Walker Cup match at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club in Aberdeen, Scotland, will come from this squad. The event will take place Sept. 10-11.
Hodgson is one of 14 English players named to the squad, along with four Scots, three Irish and three Welsh players.
The diminutive Hodgson created a stir at Merion last year when he went 2-2 in a losing GB&I effort. Standing just five feet, four inches tall, the amateur who plays out of Sunningdale Golf Club is a good bet to take part in next year’s match in Aberdeen.
Hodgson isn’t the only recognizable player named to the squad. Arizona State player James Byrne also is included. He finished runner-up in this year’s British Amateur Championship.
Other college players named to the squad include East Tennessee State’s Rhys Enoch and Kevin Phelan, who attends the University of North Florida.
Ireland’s Paul Cutler is in the squad. He won this year’s Lytham Trophy and grew up playing against Rory McIlroy. Scottish Amateur champion Michael Stewart, a former payer at East Tennessee State, also received a spot in the 23-man lineup.
“I have no doubt that every one of the 23 players we have selected could acquit themselves well in next year’s match,” GB&I captain Nigel Edwards said. “But it is up to them to show that they are ready for the challenge that the USA will present by performing?with distinction and backing up their most recent performances?during the season to come.
“Players from this group will form the majority of the 10-man team. However, GB&I selectors will be at all major amateur events next year, so there is every chance that someone not included in this initial 23 could play their way into the side.”
All 12 of the players who recently represented GB&I countries in the World Amateur Team Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina are included in the squad.?
GB&I will hold several squad sessions, including a site visit to Royal Aberdeen before the match to help determine the 10-man team.
