Horry County firefighters take on blaze at apartments

Daphne Wassamire had just brought in a load of groceries Friday night when she looked out her back door and saw fire coming from another unit at Waterway Crossing Apartments.

Wassamire said she had heard fire engines but didn't think anything of it until she came out her back door and saw the fire.

"I smelled smoke, but I didn't know it was close," said Wassamire, who has lived at Waterway Crossing for three years.

Horry County firefighters responded at 7:42 p.m. Friday to the fire at 685 Burcale Road, near the Fantasy Harbour area, said Leslie Yancey, Horry County Fire's public information officer.

The fire started in the kitchen of a second-floor unit, Yancey said. She said the fire then extended into the unit above and the unit beside the first to burn.

Someone was home at the time of the fire, Yancey said, but no one was hurt.

Those that lived in two of the units have been displaced, Yancey said.

Dean Rachau, who lives a couple of doors down from the unit where the fire started, said he could see smoke coming over the bridge.

Rachau was at Logan's Steakhouse when his daughter called him.

"The only legible word I heard was 'fire,'" Rachau said about talking to his daughter over the phone.

Rachau, who made it back home, stood outside with several other neighbors and watched firefighters work.

Eleven Horry County fire units had arrived on scene with mutual aid from Myrtle Beach, Yancey said.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 8:27 p.m., Yancey said. A cause had not been determined Friday night.
